Hatherley -Ethos, Pathos, Logos

  1. The introduction he gave in the speech about hawaii volcanoes was the ethos; he gave background information about the island of hawaii that showed he had actually done research on the subject. Then the logos was the pros and cons he gave about the eruptions on the island of hawaii, and how they affect people and create new land. After his speech the following video showed the pathos aspect of his presentation, a sort of comic relief understating the danger of living near a volcano. Personally I found it amusing how the video had all that loud music at the beginning clip and then cut to his speech location which was very quiet and a totally different environment altogether. What's that word that they say in theater? Oh yeah, anticlimax. The pathos section was fairly original, and the beginning section was kind of unusual too. Seems like he can be really creative if he wants to be.

  2. The speech was the part about the ethos. Stephen has actually visited and had first hand experience regarding the topic so he was able to give the commercial credibility because of his own personal experience. The logos was when Stephen talked about the different effects the volcanic eruptions have had on the area. The pathos part was done at the end when he changed the music over to the johnny cash song and had the message at the bottom saying to not come back for 1000 years. The flowing lava lets us think more about why we should move away from an area like that and not inhabit it. Stephen did a great job with the music selection I thought it fit the commercial very well.
